Glow in the Dark Tech Blog

Had to get a new phone not because I wanted to but because I had to! when my faithful old Nokia 6220 which I got used to and which got used to me, got stolen while traveling. Needing a phone urgently, I got a cheap one in Malaysia -  Nokia 1208. This served me well until I returned home. I intend to sell this phone off. Contact me if interested.

Without the features that I got so used to having like camera, radio, GPS, Music, etc…I started looking for a new phone. Have to admit that I am a Nokia fan. I have tried other brands but find Nokia to be more user friendly. So my first stop was the Nokia site to see what they had. I normally like to search by selecting the features I like. Models that came up were N97, X6 and 5800. After doing further research on these models from forums and other sites, I decided on the 5800 as this was the cheapest one with all the features I wanted.

First impressions – a sleek, light weight phone with large screen. Besides the 3 buttons at the bottom for answering and ending calls and the menu button in the center, all inputs are by touch screen. So no ridiculously small keypad buttons which most phones have. If you have large fingers and find it difficult to select to work with the screen, it also comes with a pointer and spectrum. I just use the pointer. The best feature the 5800 had over my previous one (6220), is wifi. Never realised how cool this was until I had it.

With wifi on my mobile, I am now able to update my blog, twitter, facebook, myspace, picasa, flickr and other applications wherever I am.

MY favorite applications for Nokia 5800 are:

1) Snaptu -  a collection of applications in one place.
2) Nimbuzz – a VOIP application which has its own gateway but you can also use Skype with it.

I tried an application which allows you to blog by phone. While it worked for me – meaning my posts (including photos taken with the phone camera in real time) were sent to my blog, I won’t be using it much as it is too much of a hassle and things still did not look right when I checked my blog. Had to re-edit the whole post on my computer.Now I firmly believe that blogs are meant to be used on computers and not mobile phones.

Had one problem with the phone. It had a firmware version of 21 when I bought it, while the latest was 40+. All my efforts of updating it failed. Eventually I had to send it to Nokia care and it was done. When I got the phone back after the update, my maps and music were not working properly. Got this to work by deleting them on the phone card and re-installing them using the Nokia Ovi suite.

In conclusion, I find the Nokia 5800 a real value for money and am very happy with my purchase.
